
USB-C describes the connector shape, not every feature behind it. Two USB-C ports can look the same while supporting different charging speeds, data rates and display functions.
Charging and Power Delivery
USB Power Delivery allows compatible devices and chargers to negotiate a supported power level. A laptop that needs 65W may charge slowly or not at all from a lower-power adapter. The cable must support the required power, and some high-power cables contain an electronic marker.
Video is not guaranteed
A USB-C hub with HDMI only works when the source port supports a compatible display mode such as DisplayPort Alt Mode or Thunderbolt. A data-and-charge-only port cannot be turned into display output by the hub.
Data speed varies
USB 2.0, 5Gbps, 10Gbps, USB4 and Thunderbolt products can all use USB-C. Transfer speed is limited by the slowest part of the chain: device port, hub, cable and storage device. Check exact specifications when speed matters.
Docking station power
A dock reserves some input power for attached USB devices, Ethernet and displays. If a 100W charger feeds a dock, the laptop may receive less than 100W. Compare the dock's upstream charging output with the laptop's required wattage.
Cable quality and length
Longer high-speed cables are harder to engineer and may support lower data rates or charging levels. Use a cable rated for the task and do not assume the cable supplied with one device is suitable for every device.
What to check
